We would like to inform you about some changes to the delivery of the AP services (dpasrv:apwire und dpasrv:photostream-ap-en) in the dpa-digitalwires format. These are due in part to changes at Associated Press (AP) itself, and in part to the ongoing development of our systems.
New workflow for text kills (text)
Starting Monday, October 5, 2026, 5:30 PM (CEST), text kills will be transmitted as new, publishable item versions. The previous content (headline, text, ...) of the item will be replaced with a notice of the kill. Please note that, due to the "usable" publication status, adjustments to your systems may be required.
In the future kills can be identified using a dnltype:genre-category with qcode dnlgenre:ap.editorialtype.kill. You can find a complete dpa-digitalwires document in our Support-Portal.
Relevant dpa-digitalwires fields:
- "pubstatus": "usable" (instead of previously "canceled")
- "urgency": 2
- "headline": "STORY REMOVED: Test of New Kill Process"
- "categories":
[..., {
"type": "dnltype:genre",
"name": "Kill",
"qcode": "dnlgenre:ap.editorialtype.kill"
}]- "ednotes":
[..., {
"role": "dnlrole:ednote",
"ednote": "Eds: BULLETIN KILL: Do NOT use Test of New Kill Process, published on Jul. 15, 2026, and datelined in NEW YORK. A kill is mandatory.",
"is_publishable": false
}]- "article_html": Short notice that the story has been killed
In addition, a separate, independent document (new urn, qcode dnlgenre:ap.editorialtype.advisory in the categories-list) will be sent in the corresponding service, containing a notice of the kill.
If a revision/rewrite of the killed item is subsequently produced, it will be sent as a new version of the killed item.
More content in News Alerts (text)
In the future, AP News Alerts will be sent directly as new versions of news stories if they are part of an existing news thread. These versions will begin with a brief breaking news update, followed by the text of the previous version, so that the News Alerts provide more context.
Changes to metadata (text + image)
Since many of our customers receive various types of media and content from us via different agencies, we would like to provide this content in an as consistent as possible format. With this in mind, certain metadata in the dpa-digitalwires format for AP content will change as of October 5, 2026:
- Editorial notes will get the role dnlrole:ednote (instead of dnlrole:ap.ednote) in the future.
- Priorities (urgency) will range from 1 (highest) to 8 (instead of the previous 1 to 5)
- Images: The time the image was taken will now be included in the content_created-field
- The dnltype:located-metadata will be removed.
- The dpa desk (dnltype:desk-metadata) will be removed.
Please make sure that the planned changes do not cause any problems in your processing.
